Want to maximise your recovery on overnight adventures? A luxurious 7.5cm thick, this Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Mat provides the perfect level of cushioning, support and stability. Not convinced? Just watch the Gear Test, where we see exactly what it takes to puncture our Ultralight Insulated Sleeping Mat (hint: when we say ‘extreme durability’, we mean it).

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Insulated Sleeping Mat (R4) is designed to be an all-rounder that will provide the warmth and comfort you need for most camping scenarios, from warm summer weather down to about 0ºC.
For below freezing conditions, you can pair the Insulated Sleeping Mat with our Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Mat, which will give you a combined R-value of 6, or consider investing in the Insulated Sleeping Mat PLUS (R6).
Our sleeping mat R-values are currently calculated based on an in-house testing formula that uses a combination of lab-style simulations and field testing.
At the start of 2025, we began the process of certifying our inflatable sleeping mats according to the ASTM F3340-18 industry standard. Our Insulated Sleeping Mat PLUS (R6) was third-party tested in April 2025 and received ASTM certified R-value of 6.2. The other sleeping mats in the range are scheduled to be tested over the next two years.
For more information on sleeping mat R-values, please refer to this guide.
To clean your sleeping mat, follow these steps:
Partially inflate the mat and close the valve to prevent water from entering the mat.
Clean the entire surface using a soft, damp cloth and technical outdoor gear wash solution.
Gently wipe or rinse off with lukewarm water until there is no soap residue remaining.
Towel off excess water and lay out flat over a drying rack in a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
Wait until the sleeping mat is completely dry before putting it into storage.
For long-term storage, we recommend leaving your sleeping mat unrolled and loosely inflated with the valve open in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
For more information on how to clean and store your sleeping mat, check out this blog.
We have designed our sleeping mat to be highly durable and resistant to punctures (check out this video if you want to see us put it to the test), but if you do happen to puncture your mat, we are here to help.
Our Returns & Repair information page provides a step by step guide on how to find and repair a sleeping mat puncture, as well as common issues that can cause partial deflation, including not closing the valve correctly, cold weather, and natural fabric stretch.
Many hyper-lightweight sleeping mats focus entirely on stripping grams - but in order to achieve this, they often resort to paper-thin outer fabrics that have the potential to puncture more easily, and compromise on insulation and comfort to reduce overall weight.
The Alton Insulated Sleeping Mat (R4) is engineered to solve the real-world trade-offs of lightweight camping sleeping mats by utilising an incredibly stable 7.5cm thick air-cell design paired with a TPU inner coating and a heavy-duty, abrasion-resistant ripstop nylon shell.
This allows you to enjoy true, quiet sleeping comfort and reliable durability without a hefty price tag.

Very comfortable with my sleeping mat and fitted sheet, love how the pillow fits in the fitted sheet
After spending several hours fixing holes in my other sleeping mats, I was really looking forward to receiving and testing the Alton mat. I'm pleased to say it seems to stack up as per the marketing. I've only used once but can tell by the build quality that it's going to be significantly more puncture resistant than my other mats without sacraficing comfort or weight savings.
My old mattress sprung a leak so I've tried a lighter thicker one from Alton. It works well and packs up small in my bag. I like the pump bag, makes inflation quick and easy.
Needed to replace my old lightweight klymit V, wanted something quick and easy to set up and pack down. If you need a sleeping mat that ticks all the boxes then this is the one for you.
First use at Cooyoyo Creek Budawangs last weekend. Loved the ease to fill the mat using the air bag and slept very comfortably at about 5 degrees. I'll definitely be getting another one now for my daughter.
I bought the regular insulated mat & pump bag to prepare for a E2E of the Bibb. I tested it out on a reasonable night (5 degrees) and it did the job. I could notice when I rolled off slightly and the ground coolness crept up. The length is more than adequate, but I'd go the slightly wider one if I could purchase again for the piece of mind during the midnight roll over. The pump sack is a great size to double as a dry bag too, I can fit my sleeping bag, pillow and mat inside for carrying inside my pack during the hike
Bikepacking essential for a good night's sleep!
Would recommend buying the fitted sheet for it to make it feel more like home too 🤙 thankyou Alton for quick delivery to regional Vic
Bought two insulated models and we used them for 56 days on an end to end of the Bibbulmun track, as well as one inflation bag and one mattress cover, sleeping on stoney ground to Sandy ground they performed without fault and were very comfortable, never felt the stones underneath, only had a minor fault with the mattress cover were the stiching on the black edging let go, the cover is worth carrying as it gives extra insulation in the cold and is less sticky to lay on in hot weather.
Nice and light the blow up bag can be used as another sack. It's faster to blow it up with your lungs. But for the extra $20 for the blow up back it's worth it. I'm sure I would regret taking it and was too tried to blow my mattress up after hiking all day.
I had the mattress blown up for about 5 days in my unit , didn't go down .
I can't fault it like everyone when you read the reviews. I will probably take a roll as well ,but I have lower back problems and my tent tub is slippery.
Everything and I mean everything Alton make is quality-from the packaging to the product. Highly recommend this product. Pay for the fitted sheet as well and then you will have an amazing sleep system.
I decided to upgrade to the Insulated sleeping pad after letting a friend take my non-insulated one for a trip, and I still love this mattress! I haven't had much time to use it yet, but the few nights I've had with it have been very comfortable. Perfect size for my body, though I could see someone with a larger frame struggling to get a good night's sleep. I generally sleep on my back, but I find side sleeping fairly comfortable with this one too. I just love how compact it gets, it really blows me away! The insulated one is ever so slightly heavier and wider when rolled up, but this is definitely a worthy compromise. I tend to keep it in my backpack at all times, just incase I need to crash somewhere.
I also decided to get the pump bag this time, and it is such a great idea for a product. It makes inflating the bag so easy and fast, and it doubles as a dry bag when not in use. It can comfortably hold my entire sleeping system, and could easily take my tucker bag and stove with room to spare.
Love this mat, love this pump bag, love Alton products.
It packed small and was light as advertised. It was also really comfy to sleep sideways for once. The horizontal baffles meant that when you layed down it would extend height-wise. The pump bag doubles up as a dry sack and you also get a repair kit in the carry bag! Be prepared to slide around though as the sleeping pad can shift up, down or sideways if you dont have makeshift walls or put some gripping material to the bottom. The mat can also be loud when moving around and the surface on the top and bottom are quite slippery if you are putting your phone or pillow on it. Quite warm too! Happy overall with the product!
Alton sleep mat is perfect . I have used it now for awhile in a tent under a tarp and as the insulating layer underneath me in my Alton hammock . NEVER been uncomfortable never felt the ground underneath and never gone cold . Unlike other brands I have used . The pump sack is fantastic I use it as my dry bag for my bedding and clothes . Great products I am glad I found Alton before I spent to much more money on expensive overseas brands . Great customer service all the items I have bought have always arrived within 3-4 days .
Absolutely fantastic sleeping mat. Easy to set up, particularly with the blow-up sack. I've included a photo to demonstrate how tightly the mat compresses to take up very little space in your pack. Seems of very high wquality. Can't wait to use for many nights out!
There is two Reason why I purchased the Insulated sleeping mat.
1. I often take a hammock camping and I have a Alton top quilt which I really like and this sleeping pad can be paired with the top quilt for a good ground option should a suitable hang location not be available for the hammock. The Mat, sheet, ground sheet and stuff sack is so small I can slip them into my camp bag with my hammock gear without a problem.
2. I have an ultra light tent, single person which is a bit of an odd shape, this pad fits in it quite well.
On this occasion I wanted to use the tent and the Alton sleeping mat since I had not used either before, a good opportunity to trial both.
The weather, hot days, warm nights sometime it can get cool later in the night but not what I would call cold, hence the light summer sleeping gear I took with me, if fact I slept most of the night in shorts and a T-shirt.
We set camp, I used the Alton stuff sack to inflate the seeping mat and fitted the sheet and pillow and put it in the tent along with the light bag I use as a quilt on cool summer nights, in this case I did not use the quilt until about 2 am, prior to this the tent was set up for max air flow.
We did the usual stuff, cooked some food, sat around the fire, had a few drinks etc. and hit the sack a bit after 8pm, at 12:15am I wake up, my hip and shoulder are pressing on the ground, I feel the mat and it has lost about 40% of its inflation. This is not a deal breaker for me, it happens with air mats, anyway I had to get up for a toilet break so half a dozen breaths into the mat was all that was needed.
I am 1.8mts and 130kg so I am not small or light.
The Positive:
- The mat was wide enough and long enough for me.
- The mat when fully inflated supported my weight, no problem there.
- It was not cold enough to make a call on the insulation, I was comfortable warmth wise sleeping on it.
- The mat was quiet, it did not crinkle when I moved or rolled over, some mats can be very noisy.
- The fitted sheet felt good against my skin, I liked it, it was way better than sleeping directly on the mat.
- I really liked the space made on the sheet to secure the pillow, that worked well.
The Negative:
- The mat partially deflated during the night.
- The sheet moved when I rolled over once and was half off the mat, it did not take much effort to reposition it.
Overall Opinion:
I am not concerned about the the two negatives that occurred during the night, after reinflating the mat it saw the night out, I got up at 5am and the mat was still firm, what was the cause of the deflation I honestly do not know, the sheet, it can and did move but it's okay, it did the job it was meant to do and it packs small.
so, Am I happy with my purchase, yes I am.
Will I continue to use it as my hammock back up sleep option, yes.
I will use it again in the LT-1 Tent.
Will I use it in my swag or larger tent, No as I have another larger mat that I use with those.
Getting back to the basics with Alton goods gear is a real life.
The way its should be,my son loves getting out with dad hunting with the simple gear that works when the shit hits the fan 10/10 sam cheers mate 👍
I bought this to replace another mat from a different brand which I love but I am constantly told how noisy it is. Not so with this mat. It’s comfortable, folds up incredibly small and is about half the price of the other one. Definitely recommend this mat. Thanks
Easy to inflate, ultralight and, fits very snug into my hammockbliss hammock mat sleeve. Pictured here is my Alton ultralight pillow. It does tend to slide around and could benefit from having an elasticised strap to wrap around the mattress to hold it in place.
Ultra handy and packable, easily slips in my backpack without being noticed. However, I have compared and it seems faster to inflate the pad with my mouth than the airbag
Received the fitted sheet for Father's Day and finally got away to test it along with the Alton Quilt and Ultralight Sleeping Mat.
This is a game changer! No more having pillows slip away from me or the cold touch of the air mat on exposed skin. Made things warmer, more secure, and QUIETER!
Definitely recommend.
Best air mattress I have ever owned. The pump bag makes for the easiest and quickest set up. The mattress is super comfy, no matter how I sleep I never touch the floor. Best value for money I’ve had with any product before highly recommend it.
This thing is tiny. I was taken aback by how small it was when it arrived, but I can even get it to fold up even smaller than it came! Suspiciously comfortable sleep, seems durable, and easy to wipe clean of the outback red dust. It may appear that the mat loses some air throughout the night, but this is just the nylon expanding after the first few nights. The pump bag is a well thought out, compact product as well, and after a few practices you'll be able to inflate your mat in no time. Highly recommended Alton products so far. I did an order of six mats for my mates before we went on a camping trip, and they all love them too.
I have bought so many sleeping pads. They are either too bulky, uncomfortable or cold to sleep on. These are honestly brilliant, super comfy, very warm (insulated version) pack down very small, great quality and compared to other brands a great price. Love Alton gear. Thanks guys
