4x4 & Car Camping FAQs

  • There is no one way to prep for a car camping trip because it really depends on the type of car camping you plan on doing. Are you planning to sleep inside your car or in a roof-top tent? Or are you camping in a tent or shelter next to the car? Are you going for a weekend trip to a nearby campground, or heading out for months on the road?

That said, here are some basic principles for car camping prep to keep in mind:

    1. Be prepared.
The best way to prep for a car camping trip is to know what you’re getting into. Do your research ahead of time to learn about the location or region you plan on car camping in, including the road conditions, facilities at the campsite, accessibility to food, water and fuel. We’re not suggesting you should map out a full itinerary for your car camping adventure, but having a good understanding of the area will help you make smart decisions on the road.
    2. Invest in a map.
This could be included in the ‘be prepared’ point, but it is worth highlighting this one. Having a paper map might seem old school, but it comes in useful more than you’d expect. Even if you have GPS or maps downloaded on your phone, technology isn’t always reliable. Plus, there is something fun about switching off and relying on your own navigational skills to explore the roads less travelled.
    3. Get organised (and keep it that way).
Putting a bit of time and energy into packing and organising your gear in your vehicle before you hit the road really does pay dividends. Our advice is to pack by function and frequency. For example, it makes sense to put your camping kitchen supplies and food together somewhere fairly accessible because you’ll be using them often. The other tips we swear by for keeping things clean, tidy and organised when car camping are to label our gear storage boxes, always put things back in the same place as soon as we’re done with them, clean as we go, and do regular ‘gear audits’ where we get rid of anything that isn’t serving a purpose. Easy, right?
    4. Bring extra water.
It’s easy to underestimate how much water you’ll use on a camping trip. Filling your water bottles, prepping food, washing up… it goes fast. We recommend investing in a 10 to 20L water tank as a back-up water supply. Yes, it’s extra weight, but it is worth it.
    5. Leave no trace. Nothing’s worse than rocking up to a beautiful campsite in the bush… only to find it covered in trash, food scraps, and piles of soggy toilet paper. So please, do not be that person – clean up your sh*t, literally. Bring some garbage bags and dispose of your rubbish appropriately. And don’t forget a trowel for burying your business, if it comes to that.
  • We could talk about how to maximise your comfort when camping all day – but we’ll try to keep this short and sweet.

Here are some of our recommendations for making car camping more comfortable:

    1. Go all in on a good sleeping mattress.
Regardless of what type of car camping you're doing (in your car, with a roof-top tent, or in a swag or other shelter), one of the most important items for comfort is your sleeping mattress. We’ve written a blog all about how to choose the best sleeping mat for you, so definitely go check that out.
    2. Bring your favourite pillow.
Along with a great sleeping mattress and sleeping bag, your pillow makes a huge difference to your comfort for any kind of camping trip. If you’re going lightweight, then look for an inflatable pillow with good support and cushioning… but the beauty of car camping is that you can also get away with bringing your favourite pillow from home!
    3. Use earplugs and an eye mask.
Car camping can be a struggle if you’re a light sleeper. Using sleeping aids like earplugs and an eye mask can make falling and staying asleep much, much easier.
    4. Invest in window covers or reflective shades.
This one is essential if you’re sleeping inside your car. Not only does covering your windows offer privacy and block the light, it also can help to regulate the temperature inside your vehicle.
    5. Keep your windows open a crack. Again, if you’re sleeping in your car, we always recommend opening at least two windows up just a crack. This improves airflow and helps prevent condensation forming on the windows.
