Fully Customise Your Comfort
This Closed-Cell Foam Mat can be layered, folded or trimmed, giving you complete control over how you sleep and how much you carry. Combined with another Sleeping Mat, the Closed-Cell Foam Mat boosts warmth and comfort. If ultralight efficiency is your priority, it can be used alone, giving you a compact, puncture-proof foundation for your sleep system that you can rely on to perform, season after season.
Rugged & Reliable Performance
With zero risk of air-leaks, punctures or accidental disinflations during the night, nothing beats this Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Mat when it comes to reliable performance in the wild. The high-density closed-cell IXPE foam is extremely durable and provides effective insulation at an impressively low weight. For those who want reliability, versatility, and no-frills functionality from their gear, the Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Mat won’t disappoint.
Premium Materials & Construction
Alton’s Ultralight Closed-Cell Foam Mat is made from premium high-density IXPE foam. Not only is this material highly insulative, it’s also more durable and resistant to compression over time, which equals better performance over the long run. The metallic film on the base reflects radiated body heat back towards you, increasing the overall efficiency of the pad without adding any additional weight or bulk.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Closed-cell foam mats, also called closed-cell foam pads of CCF mats, are made from dense foam, typically polyethylene or EVA, that are filled with tiny air pockets. By trapping in the warmth, these sealed air pockets trap warmth act as an effective insulative barrier, preventing heat loss through the ground.
Closed-cell foam mats are known for being extremely reliable. Because they don’t have any inflated chambers, there is no risk of punctures or disinflation. They’re usually made from one large piece that either rolls or folds up, making them very fast and easy to use.
They typically are lightweight, usually under 500g, but they do tend to be a bit bulkier than inflatable mats. Fortunately, because they’re so tough and weather-resistant, they can be secured outside of your pack.

Our Ultralight Closed-Cell Foam is made with IXPE foam, a premium material that has a fine, uniform air-cell structure and higher resistance to compression, so it retains shape and insulation performance for longer.
To further enhance thermal efficiency, we’ve used an aluminium film on the base. This bounces radiant heat back towards your body and improves the overall thermal performance of the mat without adding additional weight.
-
You can use this Closed-Cell Foam Mat alone, but we won’t lie – it’s going to feel firm. Ultralight CCF pads are not known for being the most comfortable option out there, as they only offer a thin layer of cushioning between you and the ground.
For this reason, most campers prefer to use it underneath another camping mat, such as the Ultralight Sleeping Mat. When combined with another mat, the Closed-Cell Foam increases warmth, add cushioning, and provides extra protection against punctures so you never end up sleeping on the ground.
-
For our Closed-Cell Foam Mat, we've calculated the R-values based on our own in-house testing formula that uses a combination of lab-style simulations and field testing.
However, we’re currently in the process of getting third-party testing according to the ASTM F3340-18 industry standard.
Alton’s Insulated Sleeping Mat PLUS was independently tested in April 2025 and returned a result of R6.2, which confirms the accuracy of our internal methods.
We plan to do further third-party testing on other sleeping mats in our range over the next 12-24 months.
If you’re looking for more information on sleeping mat R-values, we recommend reading this guide – it covers everything you need to know to make an informed choice on the best sleeping mat R-value for your specific needs.
