Frequently Asked Questions
Our underquilt is purpose-built to hang under a hammock. That said, in a pinch (or if you really feel like it) it can function as a top quilt when sleeping on the ground.
However, we would generally recommend that you go for our top quilt if you’re looking for something to use in ground-based sleeping setups. It’s made with specific features (draft-collars, footbox, attachment straps, etc.) that efficiently trap heat and keep you warmer, which ultimately makes for a more comfortable sleeping experience.

Awesome underquilt!
Fits perfectly, easily attached even with the bug net and definitly makes a notable difference!! So snug and toasty with this on your Alton ultralight hammock, a must have!!
Incredible quality true to its -10 warmth didn’t feel the cold breeze under my back while sleeping in the hammock in cold conditions, highly recommended!
Took my Alton setup to Kanangra Walls Lookout and down to Kowmung River. Was chilly as but the underquilt kept me roasty toasty. Now i just need something to keep my face warm!
I purchased the -5°C underquilt back in Feb and used it for the first time last weekend. There was a freezing wind blowing all night, but I stayed warm and cosy. Can't fault your products Alton. Thanks again.
Great product! Light and compact, kept me comfortable on a chilly night (9 degrees) and reckon it will work pretty well down into the minuses. Great companion for the hammock, tarp and big net.
Last night we hiked to a spot in the Brindabella’s and I got to try my hammock out for the first time in the great outdoors. It was freezing last night and I was super anxious about sleeping in a hammock over night (what if I hated it, what if I was cold, I had no other sleep option) but I didn’t have to worry because I had the most awesome, snuggly and warm sleep I’ve ever had. The underquilt is a massive winner! It’s expensive but it’s worth the money you spend. The second I got into my hammock it was instantly warm - I couldn’t believe it. I don’t remember feeling cold at all as soon as got in you could feel the warmth.
I personally went with the -10 quilt because I felt it would be better to have the warmest one to make sure you don’t get cold in the cold nights and I’m glad I did get that one. I’m not sure how it will be in warmer nights but you can adjust it to drop lower if you feel hot.
I had no idea how to put the sleep system together but it’s easy to work out which I was glad about. Alton Goods have made setting it all up very easy.
Thanks Alton goods! Love your work! I can’t wait to go out again!
The ultralight underquilt (0 C) is currently used as an overquilt during this wintery blast of weather from Antarctica. Just hooked the carabiners at each end together. Comfortably warm, not smothered and sleeping well.
Best regards - David
The Elton goods under quilt coupled with their hammock is an incredibly warm system. The Under quilt is really warm as soon as you jump into the hammock. It's Just like an electric blanket instantly. Clearly Alton Goods are quality made products and well thought through. The colours are great, warmth is good, quality is A1.
Stuck in Lockdown, I rigged up a couple of bi-poles to hang my hammock in the backyard near the citrus trees.
Great hammock. Cosy on top with a sleeping bagbut I kept getting a cold bum come the early morning. Tried an old Karimor closed foam mat, next night Swagman Roll from Helicon-Tek. No good.
The underquilt worked perfectly. It wrapped me in warmth. Toasty all over. Great night's sleep.
One problem- it was too warm for having a siester in the shade of the citrus trees during the day but it's easy to slide one side of the underquilt under the hammock. Leaving it next to the hammock and ready to be used as needed.
What a great product took it for a overnight trial and was very impressed.temperatures got down to 4 degrees with 20mm rain.was very cozy and extremely comfortable looking forward to using it for years to come love it great work.
Incredibly warm, and an absolute game changer for hammock camping outside of summer. The -5° performs way better than I expected - I'm usually wary of sleeping bag/quilt temperature ratings, but it genuinely would be good to -5°. I've used it at about 1° and was toasty warm. Easy to setup, and well constructed.
Did a bit of backyard camping due to lockdown but what a difference the underquilt made to the ultralight hammock.
It got down to around 6-7 deg at night and couldn’t feel any cold coming through at all. Highly recommend. Ultra quick shipping and particularly like the hand written note in the box too
Had a chat with Sam regarding what temp underquilt would suit me the best as I'll be using it mainly south east qld. We decided on the 0degree and I tested it out last night. Temp got down to around 12 degrees and I was snug as a bug in a rug! All I had was a thinish blanket on top. Would highly recommend and if you don't know Sam will be able to guide you. Thanks mate be seeing you again.
I purchased the hammock set and -5° underquilt. They are absolutely fantastic! Well made and comfortable. I will definitely buy more Alton products in the future.
Great Aussie product cheers Sam & team Alton, when stowing away at home, remember to remove your down product from the compression sack and use the included down sack.
the ultralight under quilt was great, lightweight for an easy hike, and easy to set up underneath your hammock, and it most definitely kept me warm and toasty for the whole night. well worth the investment for any hikers going into winter!
Just in time for the Canberra winter is my -10 degree Alton Goods underquilt which will compliment my Alton Goods hammock perfectly. The quality of manufacture is obvious and it has Barry the Pug’s seal of approval. Do yourself a favour and get one of these beauties.
I took my underquilt out for the first time Autumn Camping and didn't bother to bring a sleeping bag along. It was a beautiful nights sleep however my thin socks meant i got cold feet but waking up under the stars was amazing and the rest of my body was so warm. Thanks Alton Goods, cant wait to use it again!!!
The Alton Goods Underquilt is an awesome piece of kit. If you’re serious about hammock camping, this is an essential bit of kit. Having looked at quite a few different options this was by far the better product out there. Given the light weight, this underquilt is in the pack even if it’s just a day hike.
Thanks for the work Sam and team, looking forward to getting it out there next winter.
Chucking the sleeping mat and using this underquilt was a game changer and a weight saver for my set up. It is so much more comphortable and allows you to move around more and stay warm in your sleep. It feels like an electric blanket and protects your backside from the wind very well. If your a serious hammock camper it's definitely worth the investment.
Stitching and finish very good, elastic & adjustment seems a bit rough but functional.
Yet to string up and test as intended but warm enough used as a blanket.
Just back from a 3 day hike and the underquilt worked well. Used it on my bottom entry Hennessy and entry and exit was still quite straightforward. Used a couple of bulldog clips to try and give it the same asym shape as the Hennessy and this worked to a degree.
Bottom line use it on a standard hammock and you will be 100% happy with it. Using it on a Hennessy requires a bit of customising but it's workable and Alton is making an excellent product.
This -10C underquilt is fantastic for winter hammocking. It has only been down to 0C and I am super toasty. I need to take it to the snow to try it. Superb quality too. I LOVE Alton Goods products.
Used my underquilt for the first time over the weekend and I was really worried because I am usually a cold sleeper. I went with the -10 coz why not. The quality is excellent, easy to set up and I was so warm!!! 11/10 can recommend.
I am so impressed with the quality of all of altons goods products, I have been sleeping in the hammock with the inflatable mattress under me as the under quilt and tarp for shelter. I was recently out in terential rain and howling winds and my sleeping system kept me dry, comfortable and secure throughout the entire night, it was actually quite a relaxing experience with the storm surrounding me.
