Heavy-Duty Protection, Lightweight Construction

Whether you’re heading to your favourite campsite for the long weekend or backpacking in the wilderness for weeks at a time, Alton’s Lightweight 2-Person Tent is built to handle whatever the wild throws your way. Weighing just 1.898kg all up, we’ve utilised premium, high-performance materials, including ripstop nylon, DAC Featherlite® poles, and 10D micromesh, to create a lightweight 3.5-season shelter that will provide you with years of reliable service in the field.

Space Maximising Design

Alton’s 2-Person Lightweight Tent gives you plenty of space to share with a hiking partner – or spread out on your own. Tapering from 132cm at head, to 120cm middle, and 117cm at the foot end of the tent, you can comfortably sit up, change clothes, and share the space without feeling claustrophobic. The dual doors allow for hassle-free entry and exit from either side of the tent, so there’s no need to climb over your hiking partner in the middle of the night. Plus, with the dedicated PackTub™ storage space under the vestibule, you can leave your pack or other bulky items outside, knowing they’ll be safe and dry.

Storm-Ready Protection

Alton’s Lightweight 2-Person Tent features an external frame architecture with three full-length poles, offering superior stability in challenging conditions year round. In heavy downpours, the RainGuard™ Door System, with an outward opening door and integrated rain gutter, acts as an extra line defence against run-off and minimises dripping inside the tent. For lightweight missions, the fly-only setup mode can be used to create a single-layer shelter that’s still highly protective and capable of withstanding rain, wind, and light snow loading.

Customise Your Shelter

Customise your setup and unlock extra functionality and protection for your Alton Lightweight 2P Tent with purpose-built accessories. Keep your tent in great condition for longer with the Tent Footprint, which acts as a protective barrier against mud, moisture, and sharp debris. If you’re camping in cold, wintery conditions, the 4-Season Inner improves heat retention and boosts warmth. In clear, dry conditions, the Stargazing Kit allows you to convert it into an ultralight mesh shelter without an outer fly.

FAQ's

  • Two person tents can range a bit in size, depending on what niche the tent is designed for.

Lightweight 2-person tents designed for hiking and backpacking in challenging terrain tend to be around 200-220cm long and 127-134cm wide at the head with a total floorspace of 2.5-2.8m². Many lightweight hiking tents are tapered, meaning they become slightly narrower towards the foot end, which helps reduce overall weight.

Our Lightweight 2-Person Tent falls into this category, measuring 212cm long, 133cm wide at the head tapering to 118cm at the foot, with a floor area of approximately 2.65m².

However, 2-person tents for car camping or other activities where weight isn’t a concern can be a lot bigger than lightweight alternatives. Generally, 2-person camping tents will measure around 210-230cm long and 130-150cm wide, with a total floor area of 2.8-3.3m².

At the end of the day, if you’re trying to determine what is a “good” size for a 2-person tent, you’ll need to start by assessing your needs and preferences.

  • Tent season ratings give you a rough guideline for what conditions a particular tent is intended for.

3-season tents are designed for use in spring, summer, and autumn conditions. Despite the name, 3-season tents can be used in mild to cold conditions year round, making them a good all-rounder for most outdoor scenarios. However, as the name implies, a 3-season tent is not suitable for extremely cold, stormy, or wintery conditions where you are likely to encounter high winds, driving rain, and snow.

3.5-season tents offer a bit more protection and durability in harsh conditions, making them ideal for use in shoulder seasons or alpine environments where the weather can be unpredictable at any time of year. They usually feature a stronger structure and the materials may be more durable than those found in a 3-season tent.

4-season tents are specifically designed to deal with freezing winter weather, including strong winds and snow. They are usually made with robust materials that provide extreme weather-resistance, but this can make them much heavier, bulkier and less breathable. This means that, contrary to the name, 4-season tents often aren’t ideal for use in all four seasons as they are too hot to use in warm weather.

  • Tent waterproof ratings are determined by calculating the hydrostatic head of the fabric, which measures how much water pressure (in millimetres) the fabric can withstand before it starts to leak.

For example, a tent fly with a hydrostatic head rating of 1,500mm could hold a 1.5m high column of water before any moisture seeped through.

A higher hydrostatic head rating means the fabric can withstand greater water pressure before it leaks. But when it comes to tents, higher doesn’t always equal “better”.

To push above 2,000mm, the tent fabric will usually need to be thicker, and more coatings will need to be applied. This can add weight, reduce flexibility, and make the tent bulkier when packed.

Some ultralight materials have extremely high hydrostatic head ratings (8,000mm and up), but that comes at a cost. Literally. As well as being very expensive, these materials tend to have durability issues.

With all that in mind, for most scenarios, a tent with a hydrostatic head rating of 1,200-1,800mm on the fly and 2,000-2,500mm on the floor is going to be more than enough for your typical camping conditions, including rain, wind, and even the occasional storm.

If you do regularly camp in more extreme conditions, with strong winds, severe storms, or heavy rain that goes on for days at a time, then a tent with a hydrostatic head rating of 2,000-3,000mm for the fly and 5,000 or more for the floor is advisable.

Although the hydrostatic head rating is very important, it’s also essential to consider other factors, like fabric quality, coating composition, seam sealing, and the overall design of the tent, as these all play a big part in how effective your tent is at keeping you dry in real-world conditions.

  • Our Lightweight Tent’s outer fly is made from 10D ripstop nylon with a 1,500mm silicone/PU coating, and the floor is made from a 20D ripstop nylon with a 2,000mm silicone/PU coating.

We utilise a high-tenacity ripstop nylon with a square grid, meaning there are thicker, stronger threads woven in a grid pattern throughout the fabric. Combined with a high thread count, this increases the tear strength while keeping the overall weight very low.

Then there’s our dual silicone/PU coating, which is formulated to offer the best performance and longevity in outdoor settings. Not only is this coating waterproof, it also increases the tear strength, UV-resistance and durability of the fabric.

On the inside of the tent fly and floor, we’ve opted for a thin polyurethane (PU) layer, which allows us to fully seam seal the tent with heat tape, ensuring fewer potential leak points. This also reduces some of the slipperiness that can come with silicone-coated tent floors.

So 10D outer fly and 20D floor might not sound like much, but the reality is that it’s not the denier that makes this fabric exceptionally durable, but all these elements working together.

But “durable” doesn’t mean indestructible. Your Lightweight Tent can (and will) still be damaged if it’s stabbed by sharp branches, dragged over debris, or exposed to heavy abrasion. We strongly encourage you to use the Lightweight Footprint at all times, and avoid setting up in places where shrubs or branches are rubbing against the fly.

We back our Lightweight Tents with a Lifetime Warranty* against manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship, but that’s not a free pass to abuse it. Take care of your tent, and it will take you further.

  • Properly cleaning and caring for your tent is an important outdoor skill and will help keep your tent functioning at its best for longer.

After every use, we recommend unpacking your tent and allowing it to air dry in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight until it’s completely dry. Packing it away while damp can damage the fabric or coatings, and may contribute to mould growth over time.

While your tent is out and unpacked, we encourage you to give it a spot clean. Shake or brush out any debris, then use a soft cloth with a cleaning solution that’s formulated for outdoor gear, such as Nikwax Tech Wash®, to clean away any dirty marks on the fabric.

If a deep clean is required, fill your bathtub or a large bucket with lukewarm water and add some suitable technical gear wash, using the dilution ratio specified on the bottle. Work over the fabric using a sponge or soft cloth, then rinse thoroughly to remove the soap residue. Gently wipe off the excess water with a towel, then drape the tent on the clothesline or over a rack and leave to air dry completely.

If you use your tent frequently (30+ nights per year), we recommend using a waterproofing and/or solar-protective treatment, such as Nikwax SolarProof® at least once a season.

Customer photo review of Lightweight Tent - 2P

I recently used the Alton 2P light Tent on a 2-night winter hunting trip in the alpine region, and overall I came away impressed with its performance considering its lightweight design. The biggest advantage was its low weight and compact packed size, which made the climb into the hunting area much easier. With cold-weather gear, food, and hunting equipment already adding significant weight to my pack, the tent was easy to carry and didn't take up much space. Setup was quick and straightforward, even in cold conditions. After arriving at camp late in the afternoon, I had the tent pitched within minutes. Once guyed out properly, it handled the alpine winds well and felt stable throughout both nights. Temperatures dropped below freezing overnight, and while the tent isn't a dedicated four-season model, it provided good protection from the cold, frost, and occasional gusts. Condensation was present on the inside of the fly each morning, but it was manageable and no worse than expected for winter camping. As a solo hunter, the 2-person design offered plenty of room for sleeping gear and keeping essential equipment inside. The vestibules were useful for storing boots and a pack out of the weather. The lightweight materials do require some care on rough alpine ground, but after two nights there were no issues with durability, zippers, or the tent structure. Pros •Lightweight and easy to carry •Quick setup •Good wind resistance •Plenty of room for one hunter and gear •Compact packed size Cons •Not designed for heavy snow loading •Some condensation in freezing conditions •Lightweight fabric requires careful handling Overall Rating: 8.5/10 For hunters and backpackers wanting a lightweight shelter for alpine trips, the Alton 2P light Tent offers an excellent balance of weight, comfort, and weather protection. After two winter nights in the high country, I'd happily take it on future hunting adventures.

What a beauty! This was my first foray into the ultralight camping scene. Being ex military I was shocked at how small and light something with the strength and creature comforts it has could be. It feels so light and flimsy but is so good. Used it motorbike camping in Mudgee and we were hit with surprise rain and 50km/h gusts. My tent was the only one in the camp not flapping about like mad in the wind. It was rock solid and as dry as you like. A word of warning though, make sure if you leave something in your little vestibule tubs, make sure the fly at the bottom of that section is taut. Mine was not tensioned properly initially and water got in to that little tub and turned it into a literal tub. But otherwise this tent is amazing and I can’t wait to hike with it in the coming month or so. Thanks Alton!

Amazing and well designed tent. Alton have thought of everything and it's so easy to set up and pack up by just rolling everything up, including the footprint, without having to pack anything down other than the poles. 10/10 tent, especially when paired with the double mattress set. It also looks good. My only two critiques - the tent bag sucks, a lot. It may as well be made of toilet paper mine got ripped on day 1 just by being set down on some pavement. Also not being able to cinch it up completely feels like your pegs or things may fall out. I will be trying to find a better tent bag for this one and then it will be perfect. Second, something about these materials of the floor, footprint and mattress together are very slippy against each other. So if you're on just a small incline it feels like you're sliding all night with no easy way to stay in one spot. Some rubber or gippy material on top of the footprint or bottom of the tent or mattress would go a long way to stay put on a small incline. Otherwise it's a 10/10 tent and would highly recommend. My favorite tent I've ever had by far.

Absolutely love my new tent. I’m a fair-weather bikepacker and the combination of light weight and great ventilation are just perfect. The tubs are a great way to keep things organised and use that triangle of the vestibule. Lots of clever design and the fact that the door zips up neatly to a roll and the clip to fasten it is bigger than the clips to secure the fly makes me smile every time.

So far so good. Scored a tarp poncho and lightweight chair on top of it. I've had it up overnight through the rain and its dry as a bone inside the following day. No instructions but obvious to set up so not required and YouTube videos available .Packs as small as my salewa tent with the extra packing areas and footprint. Happy that it can opened at the top with an additional zipper on the fly sheet to get better ventilation on hot days but still have privacy. As an adventure rider I have bike storage space and camping equipment space as I'm using it as a one man tent. Much more civilised to reach into and get in and out as opposed to my swag style tent which was always a bit of an effort. A lot of thought has gone into this.

So far only taken it on the one night so far, so I cannot speak to its durability. But the thought that has gone into it really makes this a great tent! The gear buckets in the vestibules are incredibly helpful, I cannot praise enough and the integration of the inner tent and groundsheet is so helpful if you are in easy dry conditions, meaning you don't have to make it seperate if you don't need to and makes setting up a breeze! However, not a problem for me but I don't truly believe this is 'Ultralight'. Pushing two kilos I think this is a bit of a misnomer, but if you're not worried about that as I am, it so far seems a great tent! Another note is that it is a squeeze for two long wide mats, not important for everyone but worth noting. After more use in harsher conditions and just long term I will report back again!

So happy with this tent 😍 very well made! We did a test run up the back of our block, it is everything I have wanted and need in a tent, heaps of room inside, easy to get in and out, love the double doors!! I travel with my dog so plenty of room for her as well, super easy to put up on my own, i used a bit of shade cloth underneath only because the grass we were on was freshly cut, and I didn't want all the bits in the tent but with the ground sheet it would have been totally fine without it. Looking forward to all our future adventures with this tent 😊 Thanks Alton

Lightweight Tent - 2P

Ease of use and pack size are the reasons I went for this tent, it is currently smaller and a smidge lighter than than the current 1 man hiker I am using.

Lightweight Tent - 2P

So far so good. Was really good up bogong anzac day with plenty of room and sights of the skies as we had good weather. Easy set up and great organisation with your gear. Lets see how it goes with some back country in the the sping.

Lightweight Tent - 2P

I love the two man tent. So fast and easy to set up. It's the same size as my previous one man tent too. Keep up the great work Alton

Lightweight Tent - 2P

I've had this tent for a few months now and there is a lot to love. Alton have done a great job of maximising the internal space and headroom. This makes getting changed, entry / exit really easy. The quality of life features like storage pockets, toggles, colour coding, gear tubs, doormat on the footprint etc are all *chefs kiss*. If I could make one change it'd be to switch the ceiling hook for a gear loft. Packsize / weight is good even carrying solo, also pretty perfect for bikepacking. Pegs, guy lines, poles and clips all seem to be as robust as you'd expect for UL gear. Setup is easy and the tent is super stable in high winds. However... rain. There are a couple of features which means this tent makes wet weather living troublesome. Firstly, there is a section of the roof which doesn't shed particularly well and accumulate water. There doesn't seem to be a safe spot to fire up the jetboil in the vestibules without letting the rain in. Finally (and I don't quite know how to word this) the door zip is attached to the fly in such a way that as you unzip it keeps the material together. In the dry this is beautiful. In the wet it causes the fabric to essentially create a funnel that pours water into the tent / onto you. Obviously if you know this is a thing you can adapt your entry / exist routine but lets just say, I was not a fast learner.

Lightweight Tent - 2P

Incredible tent, couldn't believe the weight to size ratio. One very small thing I would suggest is having a print out instructions for set up with the footprint. I was in the middle of the bush and couldn't watch the YouTube video. But also, I understand reducing waste and it's my only nit pick. Honestly, couldn't be happier with it! P.s the poncho came in handy for good things festival, might be something worth marketing due to how small it packs down to! :) Thanks again! Love it!

Lightweight Tent - 2P

Easy to put up, lightweight, and perfect size.

Lightweight Tent - 2P

Good to set up and pack down. Worried it might be a bit heavy for hiking.

Lightweight Tent - 2P

Tent arrived earlier this week. Haven't been able to test it in the field yet, but did put it up inside and am really impressed with its construction and design. It's roomy inside, just how like it and it looks so good. One really neat feature is how the fly door bottom stays attached to the zip slider, so that you don't have flapping fabric as you zip open the tent, which for me often means getting sand or debris in the tent. This just stays together and easily clips to the pole. The inner tent door also zips well and stuffs into a side pocket on the inside. Best feature: I can step out of the tent and up without having to do an awkward backward shuffle! My only additional wish: that it had a loft or loops to hang my old MSR loft onto. But you can't have everything. Can't wait to take this on a proper hiking trip.
