  • We currently calculate our sleeping mat R-values based on our own in-house testing formula that uses a combination of lab-style simulations and extensive field testing.

    However, we’re currently in the process of getting third-party testing according to the ASTM F3340-18 industry standard. 

    Alton’s Insulated Sleeping Mat PLUS was independently tested in April 2025 and returned a result of R6.2, which confirms the accuracy of our internal methods. We plan to do further third-party testing on other sleeping mats in our range over the next 12-24 months. 

    Our goal has always been to equip our customers with sleeping mats and other high-quality gear that performs exactly as it should in real-world outdoor conditions, not just in a lab.
