Combined with another Sleeping Mat, the Closed-Cell Foam Mat boosts warmth and comfort. If ultralight efficiency is your priority, the Closed-Cell Foam Mat can be used alone, giving you a compact, puncture-proof foundation for your sleep system that you can rely on to perform, season after season.

Rugged & Reliable

With zero risk of air-leaks, punctures or accidental disinflations during the night, nothing beats this Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Mat when it comes to reliable performance in the wild. The high-density closed-cell IXPE foam is extremely durable and provides effective insulation at an impressively low weight. For those who want reliability, versatility, and no-frills functionality from their gear, the Closed-Cell Foam Sleeping Mat won’t disappoint.

Premium Materials & Construction

Alton’s Ultralight Closed-Cell Foam Mat is made from premium high-density IXPE foam. Not only is this material highly insulative, it’s also more durable and resistant to compression over time, which equals better performance over the long run. The metallic film on the base reflects radiated body heat back towards you, increasing the overall efficiency of the pad without adding any additional weight or bulk.

Better Gear For A Better Price

At just 285g total (including straps and carry sack) and folding to a compact 13.5cm width, this Ultralight Closed-Cell Foam Mat is one of the lightest, thinnest CCF pads on the market – and among the best value, too. As an independent business, we skip the middle men and source the best materials directly from the producers, saving you up to 40% compared to big brand alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Closed-cell foam mats, also called closed-cell foam pads of CCF mats,  are made from dense foam, typically polyethylene or EVA, that are filled with tiny air pockets. By trapping in the warmth, these sealed air pockets trap warmth act as an effective insulative barrier, preventing heat loss through the ground.

Closed-cell foam mats are known for being extremely reliable. Because they don’t have any inflated chambers, there is no risk of punctures or disinflation. They’re usually made from one large piece that either rolls or folds up, making them very fast and easy to use.

They typically are lightweight, usually under 500g, but they do tend to be a bit bulkier than inflatable mats. Fortunately, because they’re so tough and weather-resistant, they can be secured outside of your pack.

  • Our Ultralight Closed-Cell Foam is made with IXPE foam, a premium material that has a fine, uniform air-cell structure and higher resistance to compression, so it retains shape and insulation performance for longer.

To further enhance thermal efficiency, we’ve used an aluminium film on the base. This bounces radiant heat back towards your body and improves the overall thermal performance of the mat without adding additional weight.

  • Yes, you can sleep directly on this Closed-Cell Foam Mat, but we won’t lie – it’s going to feel firm. Ultralight CCF pads are not known for being the most comfortable option out there, as they only provide a thin layer of cushioning between you and the ground.

For this reason, most campers prefer to use it underneath an inflatable air mat, such as our Ultralight Sleeping Mat. Combined with another mat, the Closed-Cell Foam will increase warmth, add cushioning, and give you extra protection against punctures so you never end up sleeping on the ground.

  • Our Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat has been third-party tested according to the ASTM F3340-18 industry standard and received an R-value rating of 1.2.

I bought this mat for under my sleeping mat for a snow hike/camp last weekend. The extra insulation was greatly appreciated as it snowed all night! Lightweight and easy to carry strapped to my pack.

Love love love!!!! Excellent for extra warmth/comfort/protection under sleep pad. Also doubles as day bed when your hikes conveniently pass by a gorgeous beach. Very durable and the lightest z pad I could find in the market.

This is a great mat for specific purposes such as boosting the R-value of an inflatible or providing protection underneath another mattress. I no longer feel the cold under my Big Agnes Rapide & it is at least half the weight of other foam mats (230g on my scales - mat only). Because it is thin, I had concerns about durability but it is holding up well so far (5-6 uses). I think if you were aiming to sleep on this as your main mat, you wouldn't be that comfy.

Nice and light but too small for fat people (like me). Takes the edge off the ground but I think it best used inside my Snugpak Special Forces Bivy Bag to minimise risk of rolling off. Its light but too small.

Love this mat, in fact love all the Alton gear I’ve purchased to date. The team are super helpful and the products are what they say they are, great quality.

Customer photo review of Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Purchased to use on the Overland Track. My current mattress is R3.9 and I combined it with this R2 mat from Alton. It dipped below zero a couple nights and I happily didnt get any chills when sleeping in my tent. The huts were fairly warm so I didn’t need the extra R there, but the CCFM certainly helped keep my mattress from sliding around the bunks! For an affordable lightweight way to increase your sleep warmth - highly recommend.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Customer photo review of Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Just received my closed cell foam sleeping pad, and yes, it is 50% thinner compared to my Mountain Designs pad, but, is it 100% more comfortable? ...NO! I am confident to say it's 50% thinner, and 50% as comfortable compared to my Mountain Designs closed cell foam sleeping pad (and I'm sure it's the same compared with other similar brands). So NO, it's not 100% more comfortable, that's a stretch and a disappointing and misleading statement by Alton Goods. I was contemplating giving this a 3 or a 4 star review, but I am giving it a chance and have gone with 4 stars. I've laid on it, but haven't slept on it in the wild, so I'm giving it a chance to prove me wrong, but I stand firm on my statements upon first inspection and try! I am disappointed as during the summer and warmer months I typically only use a closed cell foam sleeping pad with a Bivvy bag, and I firmly believe this pad will be inadequate to provide enough comfort or relief from the harsh ground. I've found in the past my Mountain Designs pad has been adequate and comfortable enough, but that seems more comfortable than the Alton Goods equivalent. HOWEVER, if you are only using this pad to boost your R-Value of another inflatable pad, I reckon it will be good! It's thin and lightweight, making it a convenient option for the colder winter months. I'm keen to see how it is when camping, but overall I think the marketing for this pad is misleading. It's a good price, it's thin, it has a good R-Value all things considering, but it's certainly LESS COMFORTABLE than other closed cell foam sleeping pads that I've used (Nemo and Mountain Designs). Something to consider if you only use a closed cell foam sleeping pad... Keen to test nonetheless!

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Bought it to add to my existing R2.3 inflatable as a bit of added insulation and an anti-puncture measure. So, buying a full thickness accordion style mat was overkill. The Alton one is perfect. Smaller and better insulated than a roll of 5mm CCF. Much less bulky than others. Would not suggest using it alone unless you're into asceticism.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Bought this mat for the dog to go under his mattress when we’re camping. He deserves a dry warm bed too. Perfect size and we can fold it in half for extra insulation. Packs flat in the bottom of his crate. Pawfect!!!

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Folds down small, great closed cell thermal barrier and ground protection for inflatable mattress.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Used this recently in -6 degree overnight camp with a hoochie. Was a good sleep even with the temps, I also ran an Alton bag liner in my Snugpak elite softie 3 bag. I couldn’t recommend this enough.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

I love this mat. I use it to sit on around the camp fire and also under my regular sleeping mat for extra insulation and to get rid of the squeaks!

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Tested it out at home and works extremely well so far. I will be walking the 'Goldfields Track' in a few weeks. Bendigo to Castlemaine and about 60km over 3 or 4 days depends how i feel at 61 years old. I shall be purchasing more Alton kit soon just gotta get it past the Wife. Cheers Guys and have a few other Aton items as well.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Relatively cheap for what it is and acceptable if you use it _under_ a self-inflating mat. But "unmatched warmth, comfort and support" as advertised - very misleading

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Just a mint product! Alton never disappoints, all their products are exactly as described always..

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Awesome piece of kit. I’m a long distance bike packer and have added this to my sleep system. It’s perfect.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Perfect! Exactly as described. Warm, comfortable for a closed cell and much thinner than others.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Was pretty shocked at how thin this mat is. Not sure how Alton figured it’s more comfortable let alone warmer than competitor folding mats. It is definitely light and packable tho so would be good to use to supplement a proper inflatable mat in winter but wouldn’t want to use it on its own

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

I've actually put this mat to the test and unfortunely its durability is questionable. Most of the dimples have become compressed and there is a tear in the mat (reason for tear unknown but not sleeping related). As per another review the matt is not super-comfortable, although for a "thin" mat passable. Would i buy again ? Probably not, but depends on the purpose. It may be suitable for more gentle camping but for anything more heavy-duty there are probably better options out there.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Super speedy delivery and excellent product. Exactly as described. Buy from these guys and support a small business. Highly recommend. Thanks guys!

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Too thin to be comfortable. It is listed as being 1.7cm due to the undulations of the material however the undulations flatten under your weight and the actual foam is only a few mm thick which feels misleading. I bruised my hips trying to sleep on this mat on top of flat rock. The silver side of the mat is durable however the green foam ripped quite easily and has started to show signs of wear within a week of use. I would not take this mat as my only mattress on a trip again however it would be perfect to put underneath another mat to increase its warmth.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Used it on the Larapinta Trail under my sleeping mat for extra comfort. It made a lot of difference as the ground was rocky in a number of the camping sites, plus it helped with insulation from the cold ground. Worth carrying the extra weight.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

I was sceptical but wanted to try something not subject to getting punctured that was also not too bulky. Just got back from using it for 3 night's on the long weekend one of which went below zero. Sure the mat isn't as comfortable as the fancy inflatables but I found it ok. I used my sit mat under my hips to add a bit extra and that worked well. Ordering process and delivery was quick and easy.

Closed Cell Foam Sleeping Mat

Similar sized dimples to the competition but much thinner foam. This means it’s more compact and about half the weight, but less comfortable and less insulating. I wouldn’t try to sleep on it alone, but for extra insulation under an inflatable mat or lounging about in the daytime it’s fine. An ultralight compromise.
