The two things I like about the Alton Self-Inflating mattress is the weight and size when packed and the R-4 rating. It is light, compact and ideal for my stealth camping kit which I have to carry, often over fairly long distances compared to setting up next to the 4WD. The thing I don't like is it is easy to roll off it or find yourself overlapping the thing and getting cold patches. I use it as insulation in my Helsdon Hammock but combine it with a non R-rated yoga mat to cover the edges. It works a treat down to very low temps and I know if I have to set the Helsdon up on the ground like a tent I will have a comfortable mattress to lie on.
I also use it with my bivy bag but if I keep it inside the bag it gets rather tight; not the mattresses fault. Alton should make a large, breathable waterproof, lightweight bivy bag as well as that super expensive swag contraption. Nice and simple, generous in size and all you need when couple with the self-inflating mat and a lightweight sleeping bag. Throw it down anywhere, quick to set up or pack away.
I had some fun trying to roll up my mat but I reached out to Alton and they gave me some advice that resolved the problem. Always great customer service. I have a lot of their stuff and love it. Some of the branded knock off stuff is over priced for my taste (like the camp table I bought from ALDI for $29.99 or the camp chair for $29.99 off Amazon) but their shelter products are top quality. I have the bath tub groundsheet, lightweight groundsheet, bug net, -5C under quilt, -10C overquilt, camp chair seat warmer, 3x3m tarp and the self-inflating mat. I have no need for anything else but....
I took it on the Larapinta Trail for 2 weeks and was very happy with how quick and easy the mat was to set up, less noisy than all the other inflatable mats, and it felt solid so I wasn't worried about getting punctures like other people had.
Although seemed a little small at first has worked out OK. I needed small compact when packed and that it definitely is.
Once inflated great and comfy, easy to deflate and pack away.

Bought this for use in the ultralight hammock. Only used it once so far but it was very comfortable, fits well in the hammock and very warm. It only got down to about 10C the night I used it, so will be interested to see how it goes with cooler temperatures.
It doesn't really self-inflate that well, but only takes a few breaths to inflate it fully.
