  • Closed cell foam sleeping mats, also called closed-cell foam pads or CCF mats, are made from dense foam (typically polyethylene or EVA). This foam is filled with thousands of tiny sealed air cells that trap warmth, insulating you from the ground. 

    Closed cell foam mats are not known for being the most comfortable option, but they are extremely reliable, with zero risk of punctures or deflation. 

    They’re also much easier to use compared to air mats, as there is no need to inflate or deflate them. Just unstrap, lay flat, and you’re all set. Same goes for pack up; just roll or fold, strap to your pack, and get on with your day. 

    Although CCF mats tend to be ultralight (usually well under 500g), they are bulkier. Fortunately, because they are so durable and weather-resistant, they can be secured outside of your pack.

  • The Ultralight Closed Cell Foam PLUS is made with high-quality IXPE foam. We selected IXPE because it has an extremely fine, uniform air-cell structure and offers better resistance to compression, meaning it holds its shape and insulation properties for longer. 

    To further enhance thermal efficiency, we’ve added a heat-reflective aluminium film on the base of the mat. This reflects heat back towards your body and improves the overall thermal performance of the mat while keeping the total weight low.

  • Yes, you can sleep directly on the Closed Cell Foam Mat PLUS without using another mat on top. Compared to our original CCF Mat, the PLUS version is noticeably thicker and more supportive, making it better suited to use as a standalone mat.

    However, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Despite being designed to offer more comfort than other CCF mats of a similar weight, our Closed-Cell Foam Mat PLUS is still going to feel very firm compared to an inflatable air mat.
