FAQ's

  • With 23 reinforced tie-out points and a versatile square cut design, the 3m x 3m Ultralight Tarp is one of the best tarp sizes for camping. It can be set up in a huge variety of configurations to create camping shelters for one to two people, or be used as a simple sun-shade or rain shield for a small group.

That said, the best size tarp will depend on your specific usage requirements. For a detailed comparison of our different camping tarp size options, check out this guide.

  • Yes, all Alton’s camping tarps are waterproof and come fully seam sealed with heat tape. We utilise a high-quality ripstop nylon with a dual silicone-PU waterproof coating that has a hydrostatic head rating of 3,000mm, capable of withstanding heavy rain and harsh conditions.

  • If you’re camping in environments where bugs might be a problem, then we recommend using a bug net, such as our Ultralight Bug Net Tent or any basic mosquito net for camping.

  • Alton camping tarps are highly resistant to punctures, tears and rips. However, if your tarp does sustain some damage, in most cases it is easy to fix.

For small to medium punctures, tears or rips, we recommend Tenacious Tape Silnylon Patches, which are specifically designed to provide the best adhesion on fabrics that have silicone coatings, such as our Ultralight 3m x 3m Tarp. Tenacious Tape Repair Tape is also highly effective and may be better suited for repairing larger rips or tears.

For more information on how to care for your Alton tarp, including step-by-step repair instructions, please refer to this guide.

  • Absolutely. All Alton’s camping tarps are made from a high-quality woven ripstop nylon fabric that has been third-party tested according to the AS4174:2018 standard and achieved an UVE score of 96%, meaning it provides the ‘most effective’ protection when used as a sun shade*.

Regularly using your tarp in the full sun may contribute to accelerated fabric breakdown, so if you are planning on using it as a sun shade, we recommend treating it with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof® Spray to help protect the fabric against UV damage.

*When shade fabric is used for purposes such as shade structures for human protection, the ultraviolet effectiveness (UVE) may not be an accurate guide to the protection provided and may be less than the measured value due to factors including variations in design, height and size of shade structures, stretching of the fabric, the distance of the fabric from the persons, the direction of sunlight, and the physical location of the persons within the shade structure (e.g. at the edge or at the centre).
