Camping Stove & Campfire Grill FAQs

  • A camping stove is a what it sounds like – a stove you take camping!

Camping stoves are specifically designed for use in outdoor environments, such as on hiking trips, overlanding or even just picnics. They come in a large variety of sizes and designs, ranging from tiny, ultralight models to large multi-burner stoves that are better suited for car camping or base camp setups. Here’s a quick overview of the most common camping stove varieties:

    Gas-Burning Camping Stove

Many camping stoves utilise a gas-based fuel source, such as propane, butane, or isobutane gas canisters. Gas camping stoves are efficient and easy to use, offering reliable performance in a wide variety of conditions. However, camping gas canisters are bulky, difficult to recycle and can be hard to find in certain locations, which can make them unsuitable for long adventures with limited access to outdoor stores that stock gas canisters.

    Liquid Fuel / Alcohol Stove

Liquid fuel or alcohol stoves are a popular alternative to a gas camping stove among ultralight hikers. Although they generally require a little more skill and attention to use them properly, liquid fuel is much easier to transport, refill and is considered more environmentally friendly than gas fuel sources.

The downside of alcohol stoves is that they can be a little less efficient than other types of camping stoves, meaning slightly longer cooking times.

    Twig Stove

Another camping stove option is a twig stove, which burns dry organic matter such as twigs and leaves for fuel. Flat pack twig stoves are popular among bushcrafters and outdoor professionals who prefer to be self-reliant in the wild and also with ultralight long-distance adventurers who are looking to save weight and space in their pack.

However, twig stoves do require some fire-starting skills to use and maintain the flame for cooking or boiling water and they are not suitable for use in places with strict fire regulations or laws regarding the collection of natural resources, such as National Parks.

  • The best cooking method for camping comes down to what, how and where you are camping out.

Camping stoves that use gas or alcohol based fuel sources are the most common cooking method for activities like camping and hiking. A camp stove for this purpose is designed for boiling water to rehydrate freeze-dried meals and cooking simple dishes over while minimising weight and bulk in your pack.

One of the main downsides of lightweight hiking stoves like this is that the heat is limited to a small area, you’ll need to watch your food closely as you cook to make sure it doesn’t burn or stick. However, with the right camping cookware in your kit and a bit of practice, you can use an ultralight fuel stove to cook a variety of delicious meals.

If you are camping in a location that allows campfires, then it is hard to beat the simple satisfaction of cooking up some fresh food over the hot coals. Just be sure to read up on how to safely and responsibly build and cook over a campfire if you’re interested in trying this method.

  • You can grill all kinds of food over a campfire! Start with the basics; grilled meat and vegetables, shish kebabs, burgers, tacos, etc. are all easy and super tasty to make with a camp grill.

But if you want to get fancy with your camping cooking, the world is your oyster (kilpatrick).

Use some aluminium foil to create a ‘foil packet’ to place on your camping grill and BOOM! You essentially have a mini oven to play with. For something savoury, why not try this foil packet campfire cooking method to make gnocchi, nachos or marinated fish? And when you’re ready for dessert, you whip up an apple crumble, fresh toast or baked chocolate bananas.
