Ultralight Camp Chair

This is our second generation of the Ultralight Camp Chair. The main change is that we’ve now shifted to a ripstop nylon reinforced with UHMWPE, the world’s strongest fibre.

We’ve made some minor changes to the design of the seat, so there are now two open cut-outs instead of the mesh, but apart from that the design is very similar to the previous generation. We’ve kept the pocket, giving you a practical place to store your phone or other small items within easy reach. 

The frame structure itself is unchanged, so the new Ultralight Camp Chair has the exact same dimensions as the previous generation. This means it is still compatible with all our chair accessories.

UHMWPE stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. Quite a mouthful. It’s one of several super-strong, ultralight fibres that are known for their incredible tensile strength, low stretch, and resistance to water and UV damage. 

Dyneema® is the brand name for a specific type of UHMWPE fibre, first developed in the late 1960s. Other brands have gone on to produce fabrics using UHMWPE fibres, but Dyneema® remains the most well known. 

Our Ultralight Camp Chair utilises ripstop nylon that’s reinforced with UHMWPE in a square grid, resulting in an ultralight fabric that’s exceptionally strong, durable, and long-lasting, while still being extremely lightweight.

Here at Alton, we are big fans of camping chairs and we know a lot of campers who agree with us. But whether or not a camping chair is ‘worth it’ for you really comes down to your own priorities and comfort preferences. 

But, since you asked, we’ll explain why we personally think that camping chairs are worth it. 

In a nutshell, a camping chair provides a supportive, comfortable place to socialise, eat meals, and relax after a long day. That might sound like an unnecessary luxury, but the added comfort of a camping chair can make your outdoor experiences more enjoyable. That’s a huge plus. 

Plus, for people who struggle with sore knees or back pain when hiking, a camping chair can be a game changer. And even if you don’t  struggle with joint pain, sitting in a lightweight camp chair may contribute to your recovery after a big hike as it takes the pressure off your legs and back. And better recovery equals better performance the next day. 

That’s why in most outdoor scenarios, including some overnight hikes, car camping, beach trips, and even festivals or sporting events, a camping chair is 100% worth it. 

For challenging multi-day hikes, a sit pad is a good middle ground, as it offers some cushioning while still being extremely lightweight. However, some campers find that the comfort and recovery benefits they get from using a real ultralight camping chair is worth carrying the extra weight.

Camping chairs range from as little as 300-400g all the way up to 3kg or more. The ‘best’ weight for a camping chair really depends on what balance you want between comfort, durability, and packability. 

The lightest camp chair models usually weigh 500g or less, and are made with ultralight materials and feature compact frames that are closer to the ground and lower backs. They typically have lower weight bearing capabilities, too, so it’s worth being mindful of that before you make a purchase.
