Frequently Asked Questions
-
As the lightest sleeping mat in our range, the Ultralight Sleeping Mat (R2) is designed for use in warm to mild weather conditions.
With an R-value of 2, most people will be comfortable using this mat in temperatures down to about 5ºC, although this will vary depending on other factors such as the weather conditions, what other sources of insulation you’re using with it, and how sensitive you are to the cold.
For more information on sleeping mat R-values, please refer to this guide.
-
Alton sleeping mat R-values are calculated based on an in-house testing formula that combines lab-style simulations and field testing.
Our goal is to provide our customers with the utmost confidence and assurance in their Alton gear, which is why we are now in the process of third-party testing our sleeping mats according to the ASTM F3340-18 industry standard.
In April 2025, our Insulated Sleeping Mat PLUS (R6) received ASTM-certified R-value of 6.2, and the other sleeping mats in our range are scheduled to be tested over the next two years.

To clean your sleeping mat, follow these steps:
- Inflate the mat and close the valve completely to prevent water from entering the mat.
- Using a suitable outdoor gear wash and damp cloth or sponge, clean the entire surface of the mat.
- Rinse off the mat with lukewarm water to remove soap residue.
- Towel down the mat and then place it on a drying rack in a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
- Wait until completely dry before packing it away.
For long-term storage, we recommend keeping your sleeping mat unrolled and loosely inflated with the valve open. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

All Alton sleeping mats are designed to be highly durable and resistant to damage from abrasion and punctures, but accidents can (and do) still happen.
If you think your sleeping mat might have a puncture, we are here to help. Our Returns & Repair information page includes a step by step guide on how to find and repair a puncture, as well as to identify common (non-puncture) issues that can cause partial deflation, including incorrectly closing the valve, cold conditions, and fabric stretch.
